Martine and I cycled the length of Shag End, HRM, this afternoon. This lovely peninsula extends into the Atlantic off route 333 (on the road to Peggy's Cove), and separates Shad Bay from Blind Bay. Though the roads throughout the peninsula are gravel, they are lovely for bicycles, and there is little traffic. It is not a prime migration hotspot, but there are usually a few interesting birds. Today Martine spotted all the notable species, especially a Turkey Vulture that soared over us as we prepared our bikes. She also first saw the Gray Jays that responded to my pishing, and later saw an adult Bald Eagle cruise by -- I was otherwise occupied, trying to find the energy to cycle up a steep hill. I investigated the various chickadee flocks we encountered (Boreals and Black-cappeds in equal measure), and there were four species of warbler mixed in -- Blackpoll, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Magnolia. A very pleasant outing, once the fog lifted. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blake Maybank Editor, "Nova Scotia Birds" author, "Birding Sites of Nova Scotia" http://maybank.tripod.com/BSNS.htm 144 Bayview Drive White's Lake, Nova Scotia, B3T 1Z1, Canada maybank@ns.sympatico.ca (902) 852-2077 -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
