Subject: [NatureNS] Political rant re environment cutbacks

Non-profit nature and environment organizations are having a hard time
accessing federal program funding because it isn't there any more. The
spring 2007 federal budget made cuts of $7.6 million to grants and
contributions to environmental groups, $55.4 million cuts to youth
employment programs that previously allowed community organizations and
other non-profit groups to hire youth, and a $4.6 million cut to the Museums
Assistance Program. Yesterday, CBC news sources said the Canadian Wildlife
Service had its service budget frozen for the rest of the fiscal year and
other groups' budgets were cut by up to 80 per cent. The cuts include an 80
per cent budget cut to the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Network,
while the Migratory Bird Program budget has been cut in half. The budget
for 144 National Wildlife Areas has been slashed from $1.9 million to zero.
Environment Minister John Baird's office says spending is being prioritized
for climate change initiatives. It sounds like they are going to forget
about the environment so they can fight climate change. That doesn't make
sense to me.........

  Harold
