Some worth-mentioning birds Thursday, September 13, 2007

Birds sighted by Fulton Lavender and Liz Doull. A few unseen birds =
were heard by Fulton

Sandy Cove Road

Golden crowned kinglet
Ruby crowned kinglet
red eyed vireo
black and white warbler
blackpoll warbler
Nashville warbler
 Wilson's Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Common Yellow Throat - everywhere!
Palm Warbler
Yellow warbler
Boreal Chickadee - preferring spruce trees=20
1 Grey Jay - seen, 2-3 heard=20
Black backed woodpecker - heard
White winged crossbills - flying in the sky=20
1 Baltimore Oriole
3 bobolink - flying high in the sky
1 Solitary Sandpiper - heard - in the brook at the end of the road

Warblers were mostly heard but wouldn't come out visibly due to bright =
sun and strong winds.=20

No luck with the yellow throated warbler or white eyed vireo

You will notice that alder trees and branches hanging over the road have =
been cut down by the branch/ tree-cutting people - operating the =
branch-cutting machine - the process took 3 days (Tuesday- Thursday) so =
some 'good' birds may have moved on. =20

Tuesday, Sept 11, 2007 - Sandy Cove Road Liz Doull found Cape May and =
Bay breasted warblers. Really a lot of bird activity in the drizzle. =
Difficult to check out each of more than 50 birds flying back and forth =
in the spruce area (from the entrance to where there were several large =
boulders on the left side). Birds stopped moving when heavy rain began =
at 10:30. Twenty-six species were seen in one spot. It was possible the =
two rare birds were present. I had to leave due to my meeting at 11.=20
........................

Duncan Cove Road/ Trail

1 Blue headed vireo - at first sounding like a yellow throated vireo
1 red eyed vireo
2 Wilson's Warbler
Blackpoll warblers
4 Baltimore Orioles... (at least 9 were found the next day)

Chebucto Head Road - just before the sharp turn towards the hill to the =
lighthouse

- juvenvile Lark Sparrow - good looks - not there Friday am
- Yellow billed cuckoo - flying by - seen by Fulton only - quick glance =
- not relocated
- swamp sparrow

Chebucto Head Road (near the T-intersection with Ketch Harbour Road)

Chestnut sided warbler
Rose breasted grosbeak

Dottie's Pond (from the Willis property) - scoped

- Marbled Godwit - with 16 wimbrels - difficult to find the godwit at a =
distance from the Willis property esp on a bright sunny day. They move =
and disappear in one of the few little coves which are not visible. The =
best view **may** be on the top of the hill - where the Rosebank Farm =
is - where you could see those little coves and in better lighting esp =
in the afternoon. Patience is necessary if you really want to see the =
godwit. =20

Scoped beyond the Shorebird Cove/ Smelly Cove - Three Fathom Harbour - =
low tide

stilt sandpiper with short billed dowitchers (at a distance)=20

Conrad's Beach

-1 Little Gull (2nd summer/ third winter) - along with some Bonies - =
excellent looks in good lighting - no black top wings as previously =
noted by Susan B - We had good looks of its underwings so it was not =
black - Instead, it was smudgy dark grey. Few black wing tips.=20

1 Barn? swallow
3 bobolinks
Sanderlings=20
3 Ruddy Turnstones
peeps

- happily no unleashed dogs... =20
..........................................

Friday, Sept 14th, 2007 - Liz Doull only - one hour

Chebucto Head Road

- 9 plus Orioles sp, two clearly identified as Northern Oriole as I saw =
them at a distance - possibly moving on
- Swamp sparrow
- no sign of Lark Sparrow or cuckoo
- Monarch fluttering around and by me -=20

Cheers, Liz Doull
