Dear All, Sept 11, 2007 On Sunday afternoon (Sept 9), in spite of the prolonged dry weather, Honeybees were abundant on an extensive patch of Japanese Knotweed [_Polygonum cuspidatum_] along Prospect St. This Knotweed was in full bloom at the time. For those who may wish to contain such colonies, mowing would still likely be effective. The short common Knotweed with the dark blotch on the leaf (Heart's Ease, Smartweed; _Polygonum persicaria_ ?) along the Kentville waterline was just coming into bloom and, considering the relatively few flowers open, also had many Honey Bees. Also numerous assorted Hymonoptera were active on Aster and Solidago spp. including fresh looking unusually large Black Wasps (perhaps what Jim calls the Bald-Faced Hornet). Whatever the name, they have a stunning black & white coloration and I think they are the ones with an unusually powerful sting. Today, the Witch Hazel on the lawn is just past full bloom. Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
