Dear All, Sept 6, 2007 In North Alton this morning a Woodpecker started feeding just overhead, making lots of noise, in a fair-sized (~2.5 dm diam) live Poplar and the easiest way to circle the tree while looking up was to place one hand behind the trunk and swing around. It turned out to be just a Hairy but I was surprised to feel the trunk vibrate after each hammer. The Hairy was feeding near the top of a dead upright snag that branched from the trunk about 2/3 of the way up. Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
