These birds were all in/on the rocks below the railroad tracks and down to the water line, and they were very well camouflaged. I was puzzling over the sizes and identities of the yellowlegs when the LESSE= R YELLOWLEGS walked into a group of the GREATERS, and the contrast of course ended the problem. All of the shorebirds flew to the north 1.5 hours after high tide and began to forage on the newly exposed mud of the harbour channel leading out to the Cornwallis River mouth. ---------- From: Jim Wolford <jimwolford@eastlink.ca> Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 16:41:09 -0300 To: Judy & Gordon Tufts <tandove@ns.sympatico.ca>, Peter Hicklin <Peter.Hicklin@ec.gc.ca>, Sherman Boates <boatesjs@gov.ns.ca> Cc: Jim Wolford <jimwolford@eastlink.ca> Subject: FW: Shorebirds at the Guzzle Tues Aug 14 Thanks, Judy. Rest assured that among the peeps I observed yesterday afternoon (Aug. 15) from 1.5 to almost 3 hours past high tide (ht was 3:25 p.m.), semipalmated sandpipers were very probably the huge majority that were foraging and feeding -- I can't be absolutely certain of this, but thi= s is definitely true for those foraging near the edge of the ebbing tide -- I am 90% sure that the same was true for the flying flocks, which were coming and going, doing a lot of wheeling and short-term landings, etc. Besides the single dowitcher seen, I also saw a group of 10 probable black-bellied plovers flying. Cheers from Jim ---------- From: Judy Tufts <tandove@ns.sympatico.ca> Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2007 18:26:02 -0300 To: Jim Wolford <jimwolford@eastlink.ca> Subject: Shorebirds at the Guzzle Tues Aug 14 After seeing your e-mail today thought you might be interested in my brief sightings yesterday : [I have already sent a copy to Peter Hicklin and Sherman Boates] Tues Aug 14 /07- 2 hrs post High Tide (2.42p.m.) The Guzzle, eastern tip of Long Is./ Evangeline Beach - Tues Aug 14 /07 : 3000 =8Cpeeps=B9=20 Semipalmated Plovers being the dominant species (80-90%). In the flock of 1000 nearest to me there were ~900 Semip. Plovers. (I was disappointed no= t to see more but presumably some birds had dispersed to other feeding areas)= . There were three GBHs also feeding in the area. One of the two anglers fishing there with his little boy, told me some good-sized (?) flocks of shorebirds had landed around the group of fisherfolk that had been at the point earlier in the afternoon without any concern. (this might tie in with report from Sherman Williams about hearing the passage of migrating shorebirds from his home in Avonport) Evangeline Beach near the canteen: ~ 400 shorebirds, again the SPPL being the dominant species.
