    Today, at lunch time, I had a great opportunity to observe about ten 
adult (up to 100 cm long) and subadult eels moving about in the deep 
pool just below the outlet of the  huge culvert  through which flows  
the stream once known as Sawmill River.  The site is located in the 
little park next to Alderney Drive near Mill Lane downtown.
    The tide was low and the stream was running fairly high after 
Wednesday night's rainfall. The eels were actively swimming, and it 
looked like they were trying to move upstream, into the culvert. But at 
this time of the year eels should be moving towards the sea. There were 
schools of other fish, of unknown (to me) species, milling about the 
culvert and below the low-head dam further downstream.
    One doesn't get to see live wild eels very often, especially in the 
city...
