Today, at lunch time, I had a great opportunity to observe about ten adult (up to 100 cm long) and subadult eels moving about in the deep pool just below the outlet of the huge culvert through which flows the stream once known as Sawmill River. The site is located in the little park next to Alderney Drive near Mill Lane downtown. The tide was low and the stream was running fairly high after Wednesday night's rainfall. The eels were actively swimming, and it looked like they were trying to move upstream, into the culvert. But at this time of the year eels should be moving towards the sea. There were schools of other fish, of unknown (to me) species, milling about the culvert and below the low-head dam further downstream. One doesn't get to see live wild eels very often, especially in the city... Dusan Soudek
