Chronicle Herald, Thursday, July 26, 2007 Birdsą nesting sites damaged Vandals have damaged two piping plover nesting sites this summer, further threatening the less than 40 pairs of the endangered birds left in the province. Volunteers and government employees guard beaches around Nova Scotia where the rare birds are known to lay their eggs. Despite the patrollersą vigilance, two pairs of the birds have abandoned their nests after humans disturbed the surrounding area, said a press release from Bird Studies Canada. An off-highway vehicle tore out the signs protecting a mating site on Roseway Beach in Shelburne County this summer. In July, vandals destroyed fencing on Conrad Beach in Halifax County that protected two birds and their nest. "Vandalism by a few individuals contributes to the nesting failure of piping plovers in Nova Scotia," said a news release from the non-governmental bird conservation organization.
