It arrived without ceremony or song sometime in the last month or two. It's hard to tell since it's a secretive bird of the underbrush and this one is also silent. The silence would indicate that it's a female or it could be of either sex if nesting has begun. Both sexes become silent after the first egg is layed and they even tone down their songs during courtship. Some accounts of this species indicate that the female sings faintly, as well, but I have no personal experience with her song in the field. The bird or birds could have been here for some time since neither Laura nor I are particularly diligent about checking our feeders in the summertime, since we believed, that summertime provided no backyard bird surprises. There are predatory cats, squirrels, corvids and raptors in this area so startling the birds off a nest by "pishing" or Screech Owl warbling is about the worst thing anyone can do. A Brown Thrasher's nest is low, sometimes on the ground. Here's an account of this bird by John James Audubon. You may need a kleenex on hand when your read this account.
