Happy Canada Day!

Sunday July 1, 2007:

While Jean Timpa and I were watching a Red-eyed Vireo this morning on the
Stewart Mtn Rd, in our Kingsport/Delhaven atlas square, two birds were
noticed eating small fruit in a young tree behind the vocalizing vireo. One
was a Robin but the other bird drew my attention because all I could really
see of it was a slighter larger bird, brownish, with a long, rounded tail,
which made me think of cuckoos. The birds suddenly flew, crossing the road
away from us and disappeared but not before I noted the size difference. On
a hunch I decided to play a tape of the Black-billed Cuckoo, as last year
one was calling within a km of this location, but hearing no response, I put
the tape back in my car.

Imagine our surprise when about 10-15 mins later we heard a very faint call
of a Black-billed Cuckoo in the distance on the north-east side of our road.
Just to make sure we were not imagining the sound, the tape was brought out
again and used briefly. Within minutes, there was a cuckoo calling on our
left (north-west), up the hill. Now we are not sure if there are two cuckoos
or just one very mobile bird defending its territory. An interesting
morning.

I wonder how many found the wind chilly today in spite of partial sun and
temperatures registering between 16-18 degrees?

Cheers,

Judy Tufts
