Hi there, I drove out to Chebucto Head early this evening with two visitors from Montreal - a refreshing change from the city. While there I was struck by the abundance of butterflies. I had barely turned off the engine when the first Monarch came sailing up from below the cliff - it looked as though it had flown in across the water. I saw several more in the short space of our visit before we returned to town for dinner. Other butterflies included Red Admiral, which have been common for the last week (I see them everyday in my central Halifax back yard); Canadian Tiger Swallowtail; Northern Crescent (first I've seen this year); some unidentified blues; and other dark ones I didn't see well. These were all seen from the paved area around the lighthouse - who knows how many more there were out in the bogs and barrens. Other signs of summer were Arethusa in bloom in the peat bogs, together with Cotton Grass and Pitcher Plants. Cheers, Patricia L Chalmers Halifax
