Thanks, Jeff! Jeff is an entomologist in the N.S. Dept. of Nat. Resources
Forest Insects Lab at Shubenacadie, and a lot of his work involves ticks and
Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes and West Nile virus surveys.

Cheers from Jim

Hi Jim
Other species of tick have been found on SS hares but by far the most common
species is Haemaphysalis leporispafustris. [This is the snowshoe hare tick
whose entire life cycle is spent on the hares, unlike the familiar dog tick
or less familiar black-legged tick with a succession of hosts from small to
large as they progress from larva to nymph to adult.][JW]

Subject: [NatureNS] re hares with ticks at Keji Seaside Adjunct May 31

It's common for snowshoe hares to be loaded with ticks on their ears in
Spring, and I believe that most or all of them are specific to the hares and
pose no threat to other mammals, and do not carry any significant diseases?
I stand to be corrected on this, by Andrew Hebda, or Jeff Ogden, or anyone
else?? The hare tick is another species of the list of about 10? or a bit
more species known for Nova Scotia?

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Pat Gladman, Dorothy Poole and I took a jaunt to the Keji Seaside Adjunct on
May 31 and saw 45 species of birds while there.....

.... Lots of snowshoe hares. One had between 30 and 40 ticks on its ears.
The ears looked pretty ragged as a result.
