This morning I heard a few Red Crossbills fly over, the first since some time last year. This evening a Cardinal was vocalizing near the Par 3 course in West Kentville. I note many Common Ringlets are in flight now. I had not checked for over a week so they likely have been flying for some time. Also noted a number of Hobomok's Skippers. Further to the discussion re the decline of bees, since the weather heated up the past few days, I have seen 12-15 species of bees. However today I could only find 3-4 Honey Bees. Many Hover & other flies are also out in numbers now. The main wasp is a species of Ichneumonid. Bees & flies apparently find great value in dandelions & are easy to find when the dandelions are in full flower (as they were this past week in Neil's Harbour, Northern C.B.) However hawkweed which blankets many of the fields in the Valley now is of no interest to them. At the moment the flower that attracts them most is a cotoneaster which covers a slope in our back property. The flowers are innocuous but obviously offers something of value to them.
