Hi,

just to clarify my last posting and to avoid misunderstandings:

-I should have sent two separate messages

The first part quoting Hans' posting on NSRB was intended to bring this possible sighting of a Swallow-tailed Kite" to the attention of NatureNS subscribers not reading NSRB. Figured it may be of interest because the timing may suggest the sighting in Brier and the one in Halifax to be related, i.e. the same individual.
To bad it didn't show up on NatureNS directly.

The second part about the procedure how to deal with Rare Bird sightings was more initiated by the response asking about an existing database/publication other than Tuft's book.

-I agree with Ian, that mailing lists like NatureNS and NSRB are the place to let people know about sightings, possible sightings, and suspicious birds. The main objective is to let people know what is or could be out there, and to give them a timely chance to go and see for themself. Nothing is worse -well a lot of things are- then to find out weeks later what one missed and easily could have seen I one just would had known in time. SO EVERYBODY SHARE YOUR OBSERVATIONS AS SOON AS YOU CAN, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE WITH YOUR IDENTIFIATION.

-It would be great if postings to NSRB would be automatically forwarded to NatureNS (Blake, would it be possible to set this up?). Right now the posting individual has to take care of it, some do it some don't, and sometimes the result of trying is two postings on NSRB and none on NatureNS. So I have to monitor both lists to make sure nothing is lost for the write-up in Nova Scotia Birds.

Cheers

Ulli

The posting by Hans of a "probable Swallow-tailed Kite" was entirely the right
thing to do - that is the prime mandate of NS-RBA. NS-RBS is not meant to act
as an adjudicator of such reports and it is indeed better to get an
unconfirmed
or even mistaken report out than to fail to pass it along.

Cheers, Ian McLaren
