A late morning trip along the nearby Cornwallis R. yielded most of
the species that nest in this second-growth woods.

- 2 Chestnut-sided Warblers
- a few Yellow Warblers but one was singing an unfamiliar song..a
sort of stutter with an upnote ending. I checked Stokes CD but this
variance is not on it. Perhaps on Gibson's more detailed tapes
(1970s?) but I didn't check.
- a few Rose-breasted Grosbeaks singing.
- the first Catbird of the year for me ..... singing out in plain
view and moreover its notes were pleasant and did not hurt the ears!!
- 1 Redstart
- also the commoner species.

I watched a fly in a struggle with an ant. Likely the fly was in a
torpid state when the ant latched onto its leg. The fly tried to
shake the ant off to no avail. Finally another ant came to assist so
the outcome was certain.

Some of the Nodding Trilliums are now in bloom.

Angus
