Hi all:

Came across a group of ca. 60 gulls on the playing field at Shannon Park (Tufts
Cove), among which were two spanking adult Laughing Gulls and a lingering
1st-summer Iceland Gull. The secret to finding gull gatherings there (as
Bernard Burke has pointed out) is to go at high tide in bad weather - and
better on weekends when there are no schoolkids wandering about. At Sullivans
Pond, there was a single 1st-summer Black-headed Gull. Again, we ought to look
for adults (breeding?) along the Salt-Marsh Trail, Cole Harbour.

Of some interest is the fact that there were only two 1st-summer Gt. Bl.-backed
Gulls in the Shannon Park group, whereas on the beach at Eastern Passage, there
were about 40 GBBGs and only four Herring Gulls. I guess the GBBG is aptly
named Larus marinus.

At Hartlen Pt., harbourside beach, I flushed a single belated Ipswich Sparrow.
People ought to look for this one later on; it might stay to breed with a
Savannah, as one or two do in some summers.

Cheers, Ian McLaren
