May 8, 2007 - PINK-FLOWERING MAGNOLIA trees (several varieties) now coming into bloom in Wolfville. Also FIELD HORSETAIL tan spore-capsules are up and shedding. The Irving Centre and Blomidon Naturalists started the weekly series of Tuesday evening walks, titled ³NATURE COUNTS². Besides six Irving Ctr. staff people like Laurel McIvor, only Nancy Nickerson and Harold Forsyth showed up this time. Mostly in the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens, they saw MAYFLOWER, several (four?) kinds of VIOLETS, MARSH MARIGOLD, BLOODROOT, RED or PURPLE TRILLIUM, WHITE TRILLIUM (alien species?), LEATHERLEAF, etc.? in bloom. And along the Woodland Trails, a N. CARDINAL was heard singing. ------------------ May 9, 2007 - In Wolfville, in response to very warm weather over the past two days, suddenly SUGAR MAPLE and NORWAY MAPLE are in bloom, as well as BLACK or BALSAM POPLAR. Jake MacDonald saw an adult WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW twice (and a white-throated sparrow for a nice comparison) at his home on lower Maple Ave. in Wolfville. I heard a singing N. CARDINAL along Wickwire Ave. in Wolfville, where the sharp bend is at the bottom of the hill. In the evening, Harold Forsyth and I again did a vigil at the Robie Tufts Nature Centre from 8:30 (Sunset about 8:27) to 9:10 p.m. -- 17 C., warm, calm, clear, lovely evening -- NO CHIMNEY SWIFTS seen yet -- but we both think we heard a distant trilling AMERICAN TOAD out on the dykeland to the north.
