May 3, 2007 - At 5 p.m. I was driving along east Main Street in Wolfville and discovered a very freshly road-killed GRAY SQUIRREL on the road, between houses #145 and 146. It was in good shape and was a female and probably lactating?! This road-kill was exactly at the site of a sighting of THREE (yes, 3) GRAY SQUIRRELS back on Christmas Eve day of 2006, by Jacquie Roche and Chris Toplack, who live in the house there on the north side of Main St. Since then there have been other sightings, and in other parts of Wolfville, by them and also by acquaintances of Jean Timpa. I have some of that info' in a file. After taking 3 photos of the squirrel, I took it to the Biology Building and then searched for a freezer; I finally found one in room 405?, the mycology lab. I hate to say Iım happy about this animalıs death, but the GRAY SQUIRREL is really a dangerous alien species in this province (i.e., a threat to other wildlife), and I hope it wonıt get established as a breeding species. ---------------- At Hortonville I saw 35 CANADA GEESE flying along the Gaspereau River toward The Guzzle and the Minas Basin. At about 6:45 p.m. I saw a living PORCUPINE right at the edge of the pavement of Highway 101 near the St. Croix/Ellershouse exit. It was probably attracted to the new grass growing next to the road, and perhaps was an incipient road-kill? A bit later, I saw a COMMON LOON close to the highway on Lacey Lake. Earlier today, Darroch Whitaker reported two things to me from Wolfville: (1) MERLINS were vocal and attending a stick nest at a house along Main St. just south of the Atl. Festival Theatre; and a CARDINAL was heard singing near the Anglican Church (junction of Main St. and Maple Ave.). A yearling male HAIRY WOODPECKER (with twin red spots on back of head) visited our Wolfville feeders. Cheers :-) from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204 --------------------- Jim (James W.)
