Hi Jeannie,

I think the Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) used to be two separate
species: the Common Flicker (eastern NA yellow-shafted variant, aka
Yellowhammer, also Colaptes auratus) and the Red-shafted Flicker (western NA
variant, formerly Colaptes cafer, now its subspecific status is uncertain
within the species) C. auratus cafer.
