It is a large and relatively abundant ground beetle introduced to North America from Europe. The species was first discovered in North America in New Brunswick and in Nova Scotia, in Halifax, in 1924. It has been known on Cape Breton for some time now, however, until recently I've only been aware of specimens from the greater Sydney area. Recently I've seen one from Whycocomagh. Was this one photographed in Cape George? Is that the Cape George on St. Peters Inlet in the Bras D'Or Lakes? If so, this is the first record that I'm aware of from Richmond County. They are very frequently found in gardens a such habitats and are a species which is strongly favoured by human activities. Despite being introduced it is a beneficial species since an important component of its diet are slugs, the bane of many a gardener. If you find them in your garden consider yourself fortunate. There are many good accounts and photographs including: http://www.habitas.org.uk/groundbeetles/species.asp?item=7137 http://weaselhead.org/profile/?s=1413 Best wishes, Chris On 23-Apr-07, at 9:30 PM, Jeannie wrote: > This large beetle was making its way around the yard this > evening.First one I've seen this year. > http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2435404030025930195UJbplf > Jeannie Shermerhorn,Port Hawkesbury > > Cottage....Cape George,Cape Breton > > > jeannies@ns.sympatico.ca _._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._. _.
