Hi Jeannie,

This is a specimen of Carabus nemoralis M=FCller. It is a large and =20
relatively abundant ground beetle introduced to North America from =20
Europe. The species was first discovered in North America in New =20
Brunswick and in Nova Scotia, in Halifax, in 1924. It has been known =20
on Cape Breton for some time now, however, until recently I've only =20
been aware of specimens from the greater Sydney area. Recently I've =20
seen one from Whycocomagh. Was this one photographed in Cape George? =20
Is that the Cape George on St. Peters Inlet in the Bras D'Or Lakes? =20
If so, this is the first record that I'm aware of from Richmond County.

They are very frequently found in gardens a such habitats and are a =20
species which is strongly favoured by human activities. Despite being =20=

introduced it is a beneficial species since an important component of =20=

its diet are slugs, the bane of many a gardener. If you find them in =20
your garden consider yourself fortunate. There are many good accounts =20=

and photographs including:

Best wishes,
