Pat, we have so few surviving elms left in Wolfville that I have a hard time finding one to check in the campus area any more. I did note one smallish tree that had flower buds just opening two days ago, but it was probably not an American elm, more likely English or Scotch -- near the Acadia Arena. While I was craning my neck to look at the blossoms up high over my head, a friend drove by and honked, smiling as he waved. He has me pegged as a "birder" so probably will ask what sort of bird I was looking at, but actually I was admiring the sight of the stamens profiled against the sky... Anyway, I was surprised to see them, as somehow I always think that our Red Maples are the first trees to come into bloom. I don't have my field notes at hand, but I just did a check of old emails (isn't technology wonderful), and find that Jim Wolford, who is much better than I am at sharing these observations, has noted the following dates for Elms blooming in Wolfville : 15 April 2000, 24 April 2004, (but 22 April in Halifax that year), and 12 April 2006. So in fact 20 April is about average, but later than last year. When I walked home at the end of a warm day I looked carefully and only saw a couple of other Elms coming into bloom, so it is just starting here in Halifax. Jim, are the Elms in bloom in Wolfville yet? Cheers, Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax
