Merlins and sharpies are the two small hawks that hunt for small birds (up to size of m. dove or blue jay) at our feeders, whereas kestrels only rarely hunt birds, favouring small mammals or largish insects in open areas. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville P.S. My several juncos have been missing for several days now; perhaps I will soon get more moving in?? ---------- From: Dorothy <dort@ns.sympatico.ca> Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2007 07:09:28 -0300 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: [NatureNS] Kestrel and other birds Hi All: Things are picking up in our yard lately. For the past few weeks we have been inundated with Juncos, don't think I have ever seen that many at one time (close to 30 birds). For the past few days we have had at least two visits from an American Kestrel. Each time he has visited the yard he has taken a Junco, and almost run into the kitchen window as he flies away with his prey. Yesterday we saw both an im., and a male Harrier, they hunt over the low land across from our house each year. An Osprey was hunting over the brook and pond on the opposite side of our property. Other birds lately are: Hairy and Downey Wood Peckers (M & F) Robins Several Purple Finches (M & F) Jays Yellow Bellied Sap Sucker Chickadees Several G B Herons on the marsh Grackles Cowbirds Song and Tree sparrows Starlings Doves Happy Birding Dorothy Cameron Popes Road Woods Harbour --Boundary_(ID_/OVyFhnFxktwW/91H6gC9g) Content-type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT <HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE>re Kestrel and other birds</TITLE> </HEAD> <BODY> Dorothy, What is the chance that your "American Kestrel" is in fact a MERLIN, or, if not a falcon at all, a sharp-shinned hawk?
