Crows right now are building nests but are very unlikely to have babies yet, and certainly not ones that are producing that call -- only ravens might have babies now, since they start incubating their eggs in early Spring. (Same for great horned owls, bald eagles, barred owls, gray jays, etc.?) The call that Paul heard that sounds like a young begging crow can be heard at all times of the year, and I don't have my copy of Stokes on Bird Behaviour here with me to see what the various contexts are for this call. I get baby crows every year from well meaning members of the public who find them fledged out of their nests, and fail to comprehend the screaming swooping parents above. STEP AWAY FROM THE BABY CROW... Luckily, they are often healthy fledglings that I can reunite with the parents ASAP... The sound was coming from a group of tall white pines near the trail. When I walked nearer the source, a mature crow flew off a short distance and the sound stopped. The trees are tall with a lot of branches at the top so its hard to see if there was a nest or not. Easily be hidden. I'll check latter. A friend walking on the trail told me of finding a headless rabbit near there the other morning. Usually a sign of a Great Horned Owl. He said the crows were discussing how they should serve the rabbit so it probably is crow food by now. Anyway it was gone. There was another rabbit sitting on the trail however. Another owl meal?
