We had two Fox Sparrows arrive 2 April here in White's Lake, HRM, and they've been present through at least yesterday (10 April). Only one sings, and they rarely forage for food at the same time. In previous years Fox Sparrows only seemed to appear if their passage coincided with snow cover, but this year the ground was bare when they appeared. Just when you think you know the habits of a species, they surprise you. And this year the length of their visit exceeds that of other years, though I'm sure the snowfall of the past weekend convinced them to delay heading further north. Fox Sparrow songs have regional variation, and to my ears the singer outside does not sound like the ones that sing near Prospect, nor the ones on the Cape Breton Highlands. I'm guessing it is not a Nova Scotia breeder, but one heading to Newfoundland or northern Quebec. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blake Maybank Editor, "Nova Scotia Birds" author, "Birding Sites of Nova Scotia" http://maybank.tripod.com/BSNS.htm 144 Bayview Drive White's Lake, Nova Scotia, B3T 1Z1, Canada maybank@ns.sympatico.ca (902) 852-2077 -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
