All: For the record, the total for Evening Grosbeak in NS Christmas Bird Counts for in 2006-07 was lower than in any year since the 1970s except for 2002, but they did seem to pick up later in winter. The numbers corrected for effort (from the Audubon CBC site, rather aproximately using numbers per party hour) are more informative than the raw totals. They indicate that, with great fluctuations from year to year, numbers per party hour stayed low through the 60's and 70's, rose sharply in the 80's through late 90's, the have dropped to the 60-70s levels since. This may hint at some sort of long-term fluctuation, but it's too early to tell. It seems, however, that those who began birding after the 70's but before this century may have a short-term view of the bird's change in status. Cheers, Ian McLaren
