Hi dave,

Are you sure they are not one of the Pea Clams (Pisidium spp.)? There
are a variety of species here in Nova Scotia:

Pisidium conventus - Arctic-Alpine Pea Clam
Pisidium variable - Triangular Pea Clam
Pisidium nitidum - Shiny Pea Clam
Pisidium milium - Quadrangular Pea Clam
Pisidium lilljeborgi - Lilleborg's Pea Clam
Pisidium ferrugineum - Rusty Pea Clam
Pisidium compressum - Ridge-Beak Pea Clam
Pisidium casertanum - Ubiquitous Pea Clam
Pisidium adamsi - Adams' Pea Clam

Most of which grow no larger than 2-3 mm.

Cheers!

Chris
