This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_c0xkgK6e1jpj0WMIkL0rHA) Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hi all, Nova Scotia Migration Count The North Scotia Migration Count will be held May 12 this year. We will join birders from all over North America who participate in this count. This project gives us an annual snapshot of migration patterns and also year over year comparisons of individual species. Our recent mild winters have shown us how quickly nature's critters adapt to climate change especially now that some of our birds are making it through our winters successfully for the very first time. Some folks had felt that our count was perhaps a week or two early but with global warming perhaps our date may be just about right now! Participation is easy, just contact your provincial coordinator or regional representative and get assigned a territory to walk or drive, a feeder to watch or an owl route to listen on and you're in business. Nova Scotia's Migration Count website http://www.hanstoom.com/NAMC/Index.html provides information on how to participate, copies of forms and the records from all the counts held previously. The success and usefulness of the website can best be realized with feedback, so if you have any suggestions on how it can be improved let me know. Ad hoc counting is useful as well but provide details on your route so your coordinator does not double count species. Sometimes subsequent visits by different birders on the same routes can turn up new birds. If you don't have a county coordinator or you don't know who he or she is, that's no problem, just send the data directly to me and I'll ensure that it's included. Share what you have discovered on the Nova Scotia Migration Count with the Maritime Breeding Bird Atlas project. I've changed the name of our count to Nova Scotia Migration Count from North American Migration Count to better reflect the nature of our effort. Many other jurisdictions in North America have already changed to their local names. Currently, we have 291 species for this count over the years not including races, subspecies or other forms so if you report a rarity or other bird not previously found on this count be sure to jot down the time because someone this year or perhaps next year will tick the 300th bird. You can find our complete list of species here http://hanstoom.com/NAMCSpeciesOverYears2007.htm Join me in continuing this important project but most of all let's all have fun.
