Hi everyone:

Jim Nunn hosts the upcoming Land and Sea show, *Nova Scotia's Forest
Future*, at 12:30 pm on Sunday, March 18. Be sure to watch, or get
those VCRs/TiVOs ready.

Based on what we've seen on the forestry features airing this week on
the News At Six, put together jointly by the two shows, it's going to
be a challenging and provocative show, which strongly echoes the
Ecology Action Centre's Standing Tall campaign's key themes -- the
connection between the health of our forest habitats and the forestry
that takes place in them, the need for diversity in both economics
and environment, the utter lack of sustainability in the push to get
more softwood fibre out of our forests over the past decades.

A wonderful 3 minute piece on clearcutting in south-west Nova Scotia
aired last night. It's the STORY OF THE DAY on today's CBC Nova
Scotia's web site; go to http://www.cbc.ca/ns/ and look on the right
side of the web page, under FEATURES. It followed a very good summary
of challenges facing the hardwood sector on Wednesday, and an
overview of the economic crisis in the Canadian forest industry on
Tuesday.

TONIGHT, Friday, News at Six features Tom Miller, past-president of
the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners & Operators Association, winner of the
2005 provincial Woodlot Owner of the Year Award, and a strong
spokesperson for managing woodlots for true Acadian Forest.

Here's the synopsis for the Land and Sea episode:

--------------------------
Nova Scotia's Forest Future

In the past two years twenty-three pulp mills shut down in Canada.
The jobs went to China, India and Brazil and twenty- three
communities are now reeling from the impact. Nova Scotia's pulp mills
are also facing the international pressures of cheaper wages and pulp
in third world countries, of a decline in the demand for newsprint
and other paper products and increasing energy costs. Some analysts
predict that the end of the age of pulp for Canada is not too far away.

Land and Sea examines how fifty years of forest practices that fed
the pulp industry created a forest that is very different from its
original state. We hear from people with ideas of what we can do now
that will help the forest regain some of its original diversity while
at the same time creating wealth and jobs.

-------------------------

And if you've liked what you've heard, take a moment to drop a line
to producer Marie Thompson, <Marie_Thompson@cbc.ca>, and let her
know. I suspect there will be a chorus of protest from the forest
products industry and DNR, so let's make sure CBC knows there are
supporters out there!

cheers,
Joanne
