Hi folks,

Those who are interested in things entomological may want to take a
look in today's Halifax Chronicle Herald to find out about some of my
recent work on the beetle front:

http://www.herald.ns.ca/NovaScotia/562700.html

My colleague Jan Klimaszewski of the Canadian Forest Service and I
have described two new species of beetles from this region:

Atheta acadiensis is found in beach-drift environments (flotsam and
jetsam accumulated at the top of the intertidal zone), and is a
member of a very interesting community of beetles found in such
habitats. It is named in honour both of the ancient French province
of Acadia where it has been found (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince
Edward Island, and the Gaspe), and also to honour the long history of
the Acadian people and their contribution to the culture of the
region and the country.

Much remains to be learned about this fascinating beetle. As an
inhabitant of beaches it is potentially vulnerable to the kinds of
disturbances that can jeopardize these fragile environments (oil
spills, use of ATVs, development and use of beach environments by
people, etc.). I know from research I am conducting on the diet of
Piping Plovers in the Magdalen Islands, that a very large proportion
of their diet consists of beetles. Perhaps in the Maritimes they make
use of A. acadiensis? We don't yet know.

A second species of beetle which we described has been named Atheta
savardae (in honour of Ms. Karine Savard who assisted us in our work)
about which we know even less, other than scattered records in Cape
Breton, Kejimkujik, and south of the St. Lawrence river. The species
first came to light when David McCorquodale (who not only looks up at
birds, but also down at beetles ...) found one in his back yard.

Those who are interested in the technical scientific description of
the species, and our remarks of their biology and distribution, can
consult the scientific paper itself, a copy of which is located at:

http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/NHR/PDF/New_Atheta.pdf

Best wishes!

Chris
