Dear All, Mar 4, 2007
Several years ago there was some discussion to the effect that water
could become superheated in a microwave oven and boil violently when
disturbed. Now I have seen a variant of this.

Yesterday I put a cup of warm coffee in the microwave and left it
running too long. It was boiling a bit when removed and, without
thinking, I added a spoonfull of sugar. An instant later about 2/3 of
the coffee was on the counter.

Adding sugar to fermenting wine can have a similar effect; vigorous
frothing due to release of CO2.

Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
