All:

It's neither novel nor surprising, but interesting the way the ducks sort
themselves out in the remaining open waters from Cole Harbour to W.
Chezzetecook. Am. Black Ducks (and a few Mallards) were in many places in
concentrations and scatterings. All seven Ring-necked Ducks (and a couple of N.
Pintails) were in the open flowage of the Little Salmon R. at the bridge across
the No. 7 Hi'way. Almost all the Buffleheads were in the open sea off Grand
Desert. The usual flock of Greater Scaup was off the mouth of the Porters Lake
outflow.

Of greater interest was a little gathering of sparrows at the east end of Conrad
Beach, where there is thick Marram Grass and nearby spruces for cover. I
imagine these have become concentrated there from less seed-rich beach areas.
There were 5-6 Ipswich Sparrows, 4-5 Savannahs, and 3 Song Sparrows in the
group. There was also a smaller bird that I flushed once and it may have been
an Ammodramus - worth following up. The birds were quite nervous, but I got
quick photos of 3 Ipswiches.

Cheers, Ian McLaren
