Index of Subjects Hi Peter, Dave and All The Depths of Winter is not to be confused with the Heights of Winter. In the old days growing up on an island, the Heights of Winter was when the ice was at its thickest and travelling was most easily done by horse and sleigh. This usually occurs between March 15 and March 20.Hence the popularity of St Patrick in Scottish settlements - especially near the shore.
