Hi all
I did a little birding along some of the open water in Pictou and =
Caribou Harbours Sunday (Jan.28) afternoon and was pleased with the =
results ( 19 species of waterfowl- missing all 3 Scoters). The recent =
cold weather has concentrated the ducks to the Pictou Causeway area and =
the outflow of the NSPC Trenton. In addition a group of Goldeneye, =
Mergansers and Scaup were viewed from Company Rd. in Abercrombie. At =
this spot, a Common Loon was seen with the ducks- loons are not often =
found this far up the East River and especially in winter in the county. =

    At the NSPC Trenton, I saw 5 Gadwall, 1 Green-winged Teal (m), 6 =
Pintail (4m., 2f.), 4 Hooded Merganser (2 m., 2.f), 1 American =
Wigeon(m.), 1 Eurasian Wigeon? (f.), 12 Bufflehead, and the usual troops =
of Canada Geese, Black and Mallard Ducks, Gr. and Less. Scaup, Com. =
Goldeneye, Com.Merganser and a few Red-breasted Merganser. There was at =
least 1 Kingfisher in the area. =20

At the Big Gut bridge 2 pair of Hooded Merganser were noted.=20

    At the Pictou Causeway, there were 2 m. 2 f. Redhead ( 2 were =
discovered by Rick Ferguson by the Middle R. dyke on the Pictou Harbour =
CBC- Jan. 1). There were at least 3 male Barrow's Goldeneye and a male =
Tufted Duck which may have some other species cross. The back was black =
and the side white, but the back of the head did not have a long tuft =
only a hint of a small projection. There were many thousand scaup to =
sort through maybe another time.=20

Enroute to Caribou I. there was a flock of about 100 Robins outside =
Pictou and another 30 at the Pictou Lodge. At Waterside PP there were =
2 Short-eared Owls, a Flicker and nearby a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk =
( the hawk discovered a week earlier by Steve and Amber Vines). Nearby =
also at the Caribou R. bridge there was a male Barrow's Goldeneye for =
really close viewing. It too was discovered in the same location last =
week by the Vines.=20

The wind became quite calm at dusk and a stop in the Three Brooks =
area produced a pair of calling Great Horned Owls. I discovered one =
atop a spruce and was interesting to watch it cock its tail vigorously =
while making its call. Does this tail cocking happen all year round, or =
is this something done during breeding season?=20

cheers
Ken
