Hi, Angus and I went to CSI today. While the rest of W. Nova Scotia basked in sunshine, it was dull , gray and snowing lightly there. On the way down were 2 GRAY JAYS along the 103 near the Shelburne turn-off. The REDHEAD was off the wharf at Daniel's Head, with a few LESSER SCAUP. A much larger flock of GREATER SCAUP was around the corner. N.PINTAIL and HOODED MERGANSER were at the 1st Daniel's Head Fish Plant. There were several hundred BRANT at The Hawk, and the rising tide drove in 4-5 SANDERLING, 14 DUNLIN and 2 BL-B. PLOVER. There were some COWBIRDS at a local feeder there, but we could not locate the Killdeer or Fox Sparrow. Just before we left, a DOWITCHER flew silently right overhead, and headed towards a creek below the bank, but we could not relocate it. But the very long bill and the uniform dark breast sharply demarcated from the pale belly ID'd it as a LONG-BILLED (This is a field mark mentioned in Sibley and the recent Dowitcher ID article in Birding).- more likely at this time of year and habitat. We didn't have time to check out the Harris Sparrow.
