As this morning was almost calm I decided to try another trip as a
comparison to rough water excursions to see how the numbers compare. It was
reasonable enough that you could actually use the glasses without gloves for
short periods, a great improvement.
The first thing I noticed was that once again there were no seals on the
reef and very few in the water - I wonder if the fishermen have driven them
off?

A pleasant sight was my first 3 Dovekies of the year, bobbing along close to
shore and looking as if their beaks are in the water. Most of the numbers
were similar to yesterday but slightly increased, no doubt due to the
relative ease of identification when there are no waves to hide behind.

Common Eiders - 104
Red Breasted Mergansers - 10 (including one male almost on the shore that
displayed both a punk hairdo and a glowing pinkish breast, which he showed
off for me).
White winged Scoters - 34
Surf Scoters - 10
Common Loons - 7
Red Throated Loons - 5
Long tailed Ducks - 32
Red Necked Grebes - 9
Dovekies - 3
Harlequin Ducks - 7 (5 males)
