Hi All, With much of the month of December behind us, as well as a number of Christmas Bird Counts, the NS Winter List has reached 170. This puts us equal to Quebec, for instance, but they count five exotic species on their list (such as Mandarin Duck), so we are in fact ahead. Among other provinces that keep track (now all but Ontario), we are in second place behind BC, which is to be expected. Besides, this isn't a contest, and it isn't a level playing field --- location is everything. As is having fun. Check out the winter list page to see what we've seen, and what we've yet to see. http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/maybank/other/nswinter.htm Some that we're missing include Wood Duck, Tufted Duck, Gray Partridge, woodcock, three owls (Long-eared, Short-eared, and Saw-whet), Northern Shrike, Winter Wren, Common Yellowthroat, White-crowned Sparrow, both crossbills, and Common Redpoll. We've had all these in each of the previous 10 years, so they should still be available to us. But this has been an odd winter thus far. Don't forget to check out the species found across the country. See if you can guess where the following species were noted: Slaty-backed Gull; Curve-billed Thrasher; Swainson's Thrush; Eurasian Collared-Dove; Indigo Bunting; Bullock's Oriole. The next update will not be until early in the New Year, so until then Merry Christmas, and joyful Saturnalia and Juvenalia. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blake Maybank Editor, "Nova Scotia Birds" author, "Birding Sites of Nova Scotia" http://maybank.tripod.com/BSNS.htm 144 Bayview Drive White's Lake, Nova Scotia, B3T 1Z1, Canada maybank@ns.sympatico.ca (902) 852-2077 -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
