We estimated about 200 gannets, about 80% immatures. This = yearly concentration of needlefish and then the hoards of fish eating = birds is one of the most spectacular yearly birding events in Cape = Breton. We missed the peak numbers, but still watching gannet after = gannet plunge into the water was spectacular. Also:=20 Bonaparte's Gull, about 15 Herring Gull Ring-billed Gull, 1 Great Black-backed Gull White-winged Scoter, 1 Bald Eagle, 3 or 4 Gray Seal, a few After lunch we examined a few of the dead birds along the causeway: Shearwater sp. (had been there for many weeks) Double-crested Cormorant, another old carcass Northern Gannet, 10+ all immatures, most recent (probably less than a = week) Herring Gull, 10+, some recent, some older Great Black-backed Gull, 10+, some recent, some older Common Eider, male and female, recent Bald Eagle, 1 ad. Saury (aka billfish, needlefish), 1 on the side of the highway Bird kills because of the wires are a regular phenomenon in the fall and = early winter. My view is that high winds combined with the power lines = lead to many birds breaking wings. A few of these injured birds are = then hit by vehicles, most succumb with vehicular assistance. A very = full crop could make it more difficult for them to maneuver through the = wires. In Nyanza, Vic. Co., there were still 2 male and a female Ring-necked = Duck along with 8 Canada Geese. Another 110 Canada Geese were at = Baddeck Inlet. About 80 Canada Geese and 1 Great Blue Heron were at Waycobah. =20 DBMcC PS The Canso Causeway was opened in 1955. As the water temperature gradually decreases, millions of = the sauries end up dying there and then washing up against the causeway in a very thick windrow of carcasses. This in turn attracts scavenging birds like gulls, eagles, etc. These foraging birds are then road-killed = along the causeway, and perhaps the wires also play a role? The fact that the behaviour of the sauries has not changed since the causeway was built (1950s?) must be a testimony to how powerful the reproduction of the species is in most years. Surviving sauries migrate south along the U.S. eastern caost, where their reproduction occurs. Does it have anything to do with the wires?
