The purpose of the project was to obtain information about the foraging =
of greater shearwaters in the Bay of Fundy, identify feeding "hot spots" =
and couple that information with analysis of fatty acids and stable =
isotopes in blood and feathers respectively which would provide an =
estimate of diet (the profiles obtained from blood and feather analysis =
are compared with values from a variety of potential prey to determine =
similarities and thus identify what the birds were eating since we are =
what we eat). =20

The tags were sequenced to collect position data at frequent intervals =
to obtain small scale movements of the birds which would allow the =
identification of potentially important feeding areas - information that =
was successfully obtained for the Bay of Fundy. The bonus was that the =
battery life of the tags then gave us an opportunity to also track the =
migration, including additional foraging data for Argentina and =
vicinity.  =20

The battery life is supposed to be 90 days - some have already exceded =
that. The tags were not put on the birds at the same time so we have =
some that may last a few more weeks. The tags are actually attached =
between the wings on the back. What will happen to the tags with the =
birds entering burrows to nest is unknown but if some of the tags do =
last, there will be small scale movement of the birds also for the =
nesting area.

We would love to continue the project but everything always hinges on =
funding. This is the first time this type of information has been =
obtained for greater shearwaters.

  Laurie,

I have looked at the trackings. Very interesting.

Did I miss it or were the goals of the project never explained. I =
mean, we knew they were going to Tristan da Cunha. Could you explain the =
goals and are more birds to have satellite collars in the future? How =
long will the batteries last?

  Thanks for any info.

  Pete

Toanswer your question, the tracking program is supposed to filter =
out poor satellite fixes but some seem to have gotten past the filter =
since it is unlikely the birds flew across land and back. I haven't =
looked at the data myself but the quality of each is recorded and I am =
assuming this is the case.

The first shearwater to reach Tristan da Cunha is Sedna but she/he =
may have lost her/his tag coming and going from the burrow or it simply =
fall off since there hasn't been a signal for several days or perhaps =
she/he is staying in her/his burrow. If the tag has fallen off this is =
unfortunate since there were several more weeks of battery life left on =
the tag. However, overall we are very pleased with the longevity of the =
tags so far.

One shearwater (Kaiva) is still off the coast of Argentina. =20

Although the names of the birds may imply a particular sex for each =
bird, we have yet to sex each one and are hoping to do so through =
genetic analysis of blood samples.

      Hi Laurie,=20

Very interesting. Perhaps you can refresh our collective memory =
(at least mine, who seems to have forgotten this) as to what the reasons =
is for the apparent movement of some of these birds inland across large =
distances of the southern South America peninsula?

      Cheers!
