I just spoke to people living nearby who are good bird watchers. A week =
ago Eric Cole of Westfield saw a great blue heron flying along at just =
over tree-top height near Tupper Lake in Westfield, Queens Co. A bald =
eagle dove at the heron and missed. The eagle dove again and struck the =
bird and went to the ground with the heron. Eric was quite certain a =
kill was made but later he wasn't able to find the exact spot on the =
ground.
Years before Eric and his wife Judy saw two occasions on that same lake =
where an eagle killed an adult heron and another where the eagle killed =
a young heron. They viewed the adult heron remains about 15 minutes =
later and the eagle had it well picked of its feathers.
That is the same lake where I reported an eagle in a tussle with a =
double-crested cormorant a few years ago.
