Modern practice is to call them districts and this would have started
with a Legislative Act that created these municipal
units.	http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hants_County%2C_Nova_Scotia

The Townships were created in 1759- 1760 when the Planters settled the
various townships five years after the expulsion of the Acadians.

Ah yes. The modern explanatory text at the start of the atlas does
call them "townships or parishes". I was using "district" in the
generic sense. Now that I think about it, the correct name for West
Hants is the Municipality of the District of West Hants. It is tricky
writing it out on the cheques for the water bill!
