Oct. 15/06 - Pat and I participated in an annual field trip walk with group
of 35 mostly local people with Clare Robinson and Peter Tevauls?? (Annap.
Co. councillor) along the edge of the proposed NICTAUX RIVER WILDERNESS
AREA, along a branch of the Nictaux River, near the place-name Alpena, south
of Nictaux South. [This is not far west from the existing Cloud Lake
Wilderness Area, which straddles the King's/Annapolis Counties' line.] We
could see, to the east? of us, areas of large pines where apparently some
areas of old-growth forest still remain (most of this area was burned over
back in the 1920s, but the river provided a bit of a barrier so that one
side got relatively little burning). See the Web-site of the N.S. Public
Lands Coalition for a description of this proposed new wilderness area
( www.publicland.ca ). A few photos were taken on this walk. The walk was
on a woods road east from Highway 10 and then along a Rails-to-Trails track
that goes south through Springfield etc. to Bridgewater.

In a still-water along the river branch, between rapids, we saw two swimming
animals that almost certainly were BEAVERS.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
