The colony was active and nests and young were reportedly destroyed in the process of constructing this road. As well as showing a contempt for the law and the value of wildlife, this action showed totally inadequate planning and environmental impact assessment of the company's activities, and inadequate training of staff or contractors with respect to their environmental responsibilities. Anyone who has been in an active heronry knows that you cannot be there without knowing of its existence. Although some heronries have been mapped by wildlife authorities, the onus is clearly on the forestry companies to find out what environmentally-sensitive areas are within their cutting areas or leases <STRONG>before</STRONG> they destroy them. </P> <P> The good news is that the company closed the road as soon as the word got out. It remains to be seen whether they will get more than a reprimand from the N. B. or CWS authorities.</P> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>Wayne Neily <DIV></DIV>Tremont, Nova Scotia <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <P>"Think globally, Act locally." - René Dubos, 1972. </P> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>----Original Message Follows---- <DIV></DIV>From: David & Alison Webster <DWEBSTER@GLINX.COM> <DIV></DIV>Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca <DIV></DIV>To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca <DIV></DIV>Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Irving destroys a heron colony in New Brunswick <DIV></DIV>Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 16:36:50 -0300 <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>Hi All, <DIV></DIV> Before forming a boycott it might be a plan to wait until the Wildlife Service investigation has been completed. Was the location of this Heron colony know before the road was built ? <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> How many new Heron colonies have been located in e.g. N.B. or N.S. by bird watchers over the last decade ?
