Evening presentation of Halifax Field Naturalists: GOLD AND GEOLOGY - THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER Geologist Howard V. Donohoe, Jr., Ph.D., FGAC, FCIM, P. Geo., will present "Why Gold in Southern Nova Scotia?" Where and how do you find gold? Why does this area have so much gold? Southern Nova Scotia rocks were formed from 500-million-year sand and mud on the ocean floor of the megacontinent Gondwana. They hardened into sandstone and mudrock, then collided with another surface plate, creating a huge mountain system 390 million years ago. Granites then intruded into these rocks (now quartzite and slate) 380 million years ago, and a large amount of gold, tin, antimony, and lesser amounts of lead and zinc were emplaced into rocks. What was to become southern Nova Scotia had become gold-laden! Come and hear the story. Hold gold in your hand and wonder why some rocks in southern Nova Scotia have gold while others do not. 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History, 1747 Summer Street, Halifax. All are welcome! ----- End forwarded message -----
