Chris, Angus, Dave, others... I've put 4 shots on the Flickr site below of 3 different specimens of the same species of syrphid, all females. I've been catching this species (only females) in Halifax for the last 3 weeks, so it must be quite common currently. It's another of these pretty, wasp-like mimics: www.flickr.com/photos/steve_1968 The syrphids are in the last 4 pics uploaded, so it is obvious what's what. I'd like to get a positive I.D. for this species. It looks to be a rather close match only to images of Sericomyia chrysotoxoides, of what's illustrated in the 50 pages on Syrphidae in Bugguide.net (see pages 43, 44 there). Does anyone agree, or have a better suggestion? Chris, if you get a moment could you please check if you have any such specimens in the collection, from NS sites, presumably from September? Thanks, Steve Chocolate Lake, Halifax
