Good day,

The Heritage Strategy Task Force of Voluntary Planning has had its interim
report out for some time now. There is a deadline of Sept 25 for comments on
the report. If you have not yet seen the report, it deserves your attention
and, I hope, your support. It has some excellent recommendation for
'Natural Heritage'. Keep in mind that VP works at arm's length from
Government and so is free of the usual bureaucratic constraints. Here is
the URL for the report:

Although the Task Force members have little or no expertise in Natural
History matters, it would appear that they have done a creditable job - see
the 4 recommendations below which deal with natural heritage:

Natural Heritage
31.. Work diligently and with a sense of urgency to complete the
provincial protected areas network.

32.. Support private land conservation through direct investment and
incentives, and by working to eliminate barriers faced by private landowners
who want to leave a legacy to their community.

33.. Develop a coastal management plan to protect Nova Scotia's coastline
and ensure that public access is not lost to private land ownership or
development.

34.. Review industrial forestry practices in Nova Scotia. Adopt measures
and standards, such as Forest Stewardship Council certification, to ensure
the sustainability of healthy forests and the sustainability of the wildlife
dependent on these forests.
Do take the time to support the report - this can be done on line at the web
site above and should only take a few minutes of your time.

Regards,

Bob McDonald
Halifax
