I am pleased to announce that it appears that the Wood Turtle nest that was built in a flower bed right next to the home of my neighbour appears to have been at least partially successful. A thumb sized miniature woody extricated itself and wandered off into the nearby woods to begin the most hazardous part of its life. Let's hope that its brothers and sisters also made it out when no-one was watching. The nest was constructed in June and promptly marked so that it could be protected from any activity - it was less than a metre from the driveway and only a couple of metres from the path leading to the back door, with lots of human and pet activity every day. It appears that the house was built in an old Wood Turtle nesting area and they simply continue to use the site despite the building of a house and garage some 20 years ago. Are Turtles hard-wired to use certain sites? Anyway, look out for them, there are probably others wandering about on their first ever explorations in other areas. John Belbin - Kingston
