Aug. 10, 2006 - Ladny Richmond on Hillside Ave. in Wolfville has seen the
disappearance of her small number of HOUSE SPARROWS over the past few weeks;
the last individual was seen at her feeder a few days ago and looked and
acted unhealthy. She is wondering if something more general has been
happening to house sparrows; the other kinds of neighborhood birds seem OK.

I found a hairless CATERPILLAR crawling across a sidewalk at the Wolfville
Tourist Bureau in afternoon.  Dorsally it is dark brown with yellow stripes;
the lateral stripes are much thicker than the much less noticeable
mid-dorsal stripe; and the underparts are bright green. It looks like some
sort of armyworm? or cutworm?, but I looked through the new thick photo
field guide to caterpillars and could not get a photographic or description
match. I will try to photograph it tomorrow (non-digital) and then perhaps
give it to Jean Timpa to raise to adult-hood?

At 7:15 p.m. I saw 3 CHIMNEY SWIFTS fly past our Wolfville home twice on a
cloudy but bright evening.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
