The leaf looks exactly like Witch-Hazel (I have one in the yard so could
hold a leaf up to the monitor) and I know of no other tree that it could

Peter, Your photo shows an insect-caused GALL on the leaf. Was it a
witch-hazel, do you recall? If so, this gall is caused by a gall aphid.
Let me know if the gall was on some other species of tree. Cheers from

Walking through Hemlock Ravine Park today in Halifax (August 5th), noticed
what appeared to be eggs on some leaves. They were scattered about randomly,
many leaves with none and others with 2 or 3 on this particular tree. I
do have alternative photos if that would help. <br>
