Chris' identification below of the hairy caterpillar is just what I would
have said, too, and there was a bit of an outbreak of these on the North
Mountain north of Aylesford on Sunday, when a bunch of us walked with Georg=
e
Alliston on the Nova Scotia Nature Trust land (formerly called the Clem
Property). We saw them feeding on beech, apple, and willow, but they were
probably feeding on other species of trees and bushes as well, and they wer=
e
extremely abundant.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Hi Richard,

The caterpillar is=A0Orgyia leucostigma, the White-marked Tussock Moth, a
species found feeding on many plants including alder, apple, balsam fir,
larch, etc. Photo below:

Hi,

At the cottage this weekend (Baxter's Harbor) were a number of hairy
caterpillars, and also a large dragonfly with silvery wings that
glinted stongly in the sunlight. I have posted pictures here -
http://www.pbase.com/rb_stern/insects_for_id . If anyone has ID and
other info. about these I would be interested to hear.

Thanks,

Richard
